Expedition Stout (2013)
Bell’s Brewery · Stout - Russian Imperial · 10.3% ABV
Expedition Stout by Bell's Brewery is recognized as one of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout style produced in the United States. First brewed in 1989, it is specifically crafted for vintage aging and is robust enough to hold up to extensive time in the cellar. The recipe utilizes a complex grain bill that includes two-row malt, black malt, roasted and flaked barley, chocolate malt, and Caramunich malt, which is then balanced by Centennial hops. This combination creates a massive malt body that imparts immensely complex flavors and a heady blend of aromas including chocolate, dark fruits, and roasted coffee. While intensely bitter during its early months, the brewing process ensures that these aggressive initial characteristics slowly mellow, allowing the rich malt profile and deep flavors to seamlessly meld and mature over the years.
