Paulaner Salvator is a classic bottom-fermenting Doppelbock that serves as the foundational strong beer of the Paulaner Brauerei, originally brewed by monks over 375 years ago as a nutritional substitute during fasting. It pours a deep chestnut brown with a caramel-colored head. The recipe utilizes a blend of Pilsner light barley malt and Munich dark barley malt, which imparts a rich, malty sweetness with prominent notes of caramel, toasted bread, and chocolate. Herkules and Hallertauer Tradition hops are used to provide a subtle, balancing bitterness in the background.
